Rear lift harness

Why this product is in the Depot

I included this harness because it supports the senior dog sense of adventure even as their bodies begin to slow down. Rather than limiting their outings, this simple tool compensates for the loss of muscle mass in the hindquarters. It is a valuable ally in preserving a dog’s quality of life and their mental engagement with their environment.

How I use it

Spring is beautiful, but it has it’s challenges. Between the melting snow where paws sink through and the slippery ice, forest walks were becoming difficult, even without the consideration that Maya’s back leg stability isn’t what it used to be. This harness helps her navigate these changing conditions. By taking a bit of her weight, I give her the stability and endurance she needs to keep exploring and “smelling all the smells” she loves, without her getting overexerted. The harness comes with detachable hip supports that go under each rear leg, but we don’t use these, as they rubbed against her and made her walk awkwardly.

Why I recommend it

I recommend this harness for its ability to provide physical support that frees the spirit. If your older dog still has the will but needs a little extra physical help, this little boost allows them to continue exploring their world with confidence.

Considerations

  • Navigating with confidence: Using a harness allows the dog to focus on their surroundings rather than a fear of falling or slipping on ice.

  • Human comfort: Look for a model with height-adjustable straps. This allows you to support your dog while maintaining an upright posture, preventing back strain for you.

  • Targeted support: This type of harness is ideal for dogs who maintain good front-end mobility but need additional stability for their rear legs.
