I included machine washable rugs because floor traction is the foundation of senior dog mobility. As dogs age, they often develop a fear of slippery surfaces like hardwood or tile, which can lead to falls or a refusal to move between rooms. These rugs provide the “grip” they need to walk confidently, while the washable fabric ensures that life’s little messes—from muddy paws to accidents—are easy to manage.

How I use it

Maya has always been sensitive to new surfaces, but as she aged, she began to actively seek out floor coverings. Over time, the few rugs we had morphed into an “area rug highway” that she uses to navigate our entire home. I specifically use rugs that are small enough to fit into a standard washing machine. This is a lifesaver during the spring thaw or if she has an accident; I can simply toss the “highway segment” in the wash and keep her path clean.

Why I recommend it

I recommend these over one large, bulky carpet because of the ease of maintenance. A series of smaller, washable runners allows you to create a customized path that fits your home’s layout perfectly. Considerations

  • Non-Slip Backing: Ensure the rugs have a high-quality non-slip backing. A rug that slides is just as dangerous as a slippery floor for a senior dog.

  • Low Pile: Choose “low pile” or flat-weave rugs. Shaggy carpets can actually be a tripping hazard for seniors who have started to drag their paws slightly (knuckling).

  • Colour Selection: Consider patterns or colours that camouflage shedding or light dirt between washes, keeping your “highway” looking tidy.
