Treat ball

This treat-dispensing ball is a fantastic way to encourage both mental focus and light physical movement. As your dog rolls it to release kibble or treats, they engage in self-paced a ‘soccer-like’ play that subtly builds coordination and keeps their muscles moving.

Treat ball

Why this product is in the Depot

I included this treat ball because mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for a senior dog’s longevity. It encourages a self-paced, “soccer-like” play that builds coordination and keeps muscles moving without the high impact of jumping or running. It’s a fantastic way to turn mealtime or treat-time into a brain-sharpening game.

How I use it

Maya played with this ball vigorously, both indoors and out, for years. However, as she approached 16 and we began managing her heart condition, I noticed she would overexert herself because of the sheer intensity she brought to the game. For Christmas 2024, I “downgraded” her to a gentler version to ensure she stayed mentally engaged without putting too much strain on her heart.

Why I recommend it

I’ve recommended this to so many owners, and I haven’t met a dog yet that didn’t engage with it. It is one of the most effective tools for keeping a dog’s spirit young. It provides a healthy outlet for their natural foraging instincts and ensures they stay physically active in a way that feels like pure fun rather than a chore.

Considerations

    • Self-Regulation: For seniors with heart conditions or breathing issues, monitor their play to ensure they don’t get too “carried away” with the intensity, as Maya did.

    • Grip & Traction: To ensure optimal engagement and safety, keep your dog’s nails and toe fur trimmed. This provides the best possible grip, especially if they are playing on smoother indoor surfaces.

    • Mealtime Alternative: This ball is an excellent replacement for a standard bowl. For senior dogs who still have a high food drive, it slows down their eating while providing a “work-out” for their brain and body.
