Snuffle toys

Interactive plush toys offer a wonderful blend of mental engagement and gentle physical activity. By hiding treats within the fabric scales of a pinecone, or the tail or a squirrel, or crevices of a ball, natural foraging instincts and focus are encouraged, which is great for cognitive health. Additionally, your senior dog will use their paws to grip and manipulate the toy which helps maintain dexterity and coordination.

Snuffle toys

Why this product is in the Depot

I added snuffle toys to the Depot because they provide critical cognitive engagement without the physical strain of high-energy play. These toys—whether shaped like pinecones, squirrels, or balls—encourage a dog’s natural foraging instincts. They are essential for senior dogs because they allow them to “hunt” for treats in a way that is gentle on their joints and heart.

How I use it

I transitioned Maya to snuffle toys as a “downgrade” from her treat ball when she needed a lower-intensity activity. She uses them daily, often while lying down, which keeps her mind sharp without overexerting her heart. I also bring one to her physiotherapy sessions; she focuses on the toy during her cold laser therapy, which keeps her still and makes the experience enjoyable for her.

Why I recommend it

I highly recommend these toys for the way they maintain physical dexterity. Watching Maya use her paws to grip and manipulate the fabric to find a hidden treat shows how much coordination is involved. It’s the perfect blend of mental focus and light physical work that can be tailored to even the most restricted senior dog’s mobility levels.

Considerations

  • Lying Down Play: This is an ideal solution for dogs with limited mobility or heart conditions, as they can enjoy the full enrichment experience while resting in their bed or another comfortable surface.

  • Therapy Tool: Consider using a snuffle toy during vet visits or grooming to provide a positive distraction and encourage your dog to remain calm and stationary.

  • Supervision: As with any plush toy, always supervise play to ensure your dog doesn’t decide to “forage” for the stuffing once the treats are gone!
