Expandable and retractable (baby) gates

Why this product is in the Depot

I included baby gates because they are essential for managing the environment of a senior dog. As mobility and vision decline, stairs can become a significant hazard for accidental falls. Whether you choose a sturdy expandable frame or a space-saving retractable mesh, these gates create gentle boundaries that keep your dog safely within the comfortable, level areas of your home.

How I use it

I use two different styles depending on the location. At the top of my interior staircase, I use a pressure-mounted expandable gate. I chose this model specifically because it doesn’t require permanent hardware, meaning I can easily move it to transport large items up or down the stairs, and I can even travel with it. On my front porch, I have a screw-mounted retractable gate. This allows Maya to relax outside without access to the stairs, while still making it easy for visitors to enter and exit the house. I started using these when Maya began to really hesitate with stairs at age 15; she would get down the first few steps and then jump the remaining ones. To prevent a serious injury, I decided to put up gates to block stair access entirely and transitioned to using ramps instead.

Why I recommend it

I recommend having both options because they cater to different needs. Expandable gates offer sturdiness and portability, while retractable mesh gates are perfect for high-traffic areas where you don’t want a permanent swinging door in the way. They provide peace of mind, knowing that even if you turn your back for a moment, your senior dog won’t wander into a dangerous area like a steep staircase.

Considerations

  • Mounting Style: Pressure-mounted gates are excellent for temporary needs or rentals, while screw-mounted gates provide the highest level of security for areas where a dog might lean their full weight against the barrier.

  • Visibility: Ensure the gate is a contrasting color to your walls or flooring so your dog can clearly see the boundary, especially if their vision is starting to dim.

  • Stair Safety: If your dog starts “jumping” steps or hesitating, it is a clear sign that stairs have become dangerous. Using a gate ensures they don’t try to navigate them unsupervised.
