Winter coat
Why this product is in the Depot
I included a high-quality winter coat because senior dogs have a much harder time maintaining their core temperature. Cold weather can worsen joint stiffness and arthritis pain. A coat with a waterproof shell and a thick fleece lining acts as a barrier against the elements, allowing your dog to stay active and comfortable even when the temperature drops significantly.
How I use it
I’ve actually had Maya’s Chilly Dogs Great White North coat since she was three years old. Back then, she worked with me outdoors in very cold conditions where we were sometimes stationary for long periods. Having this heavy-duty coat on hand for harsh forecasts gave me peace of mind that she’d stay warm and I wouldn’t have to leave her behind. Now that she is a senior, it remains an essential part of her winter wardrobe to protect her from the damp and cold during our slower walks.
Why I recommend it
I recommend investing in a professional-grade coat because of the durability and the specific fit. A good winter coat should cover the large muscle groups—the chest, back, and hips—without restrictive leg holes that can be difficult for a stiff senior dog to step into. It’s about more than just looking cute; it’s about providing breathable, functional warmth that allows an old dog to enjoy the fresh winter air without the physical “tax” of the cold.
Considerations
-
Ease of Entry: For seniors, look for “wrap” styles (like the Great White North) that clip around the chest. This avoids the need to lift or bend their front legs, which can be painful for dogs with elbow or shoulder arthritis.
-
Materials: A combination of a windproof/waterproof outer shell and a polar fleece inner lining is best for keeping heat in and moisture out.
-
Reflective Features: Since winter days are shorter, reflective piping or strips are vital for visibility during those early morning or late evening bathroom breaks.
