Pee pads

Why this product is in the Depot

I included a variety of pee pads because incontinence or urgency issues are common in senior dogs and can significantly impact their quality of life (and yours). Having a reliable system of protection allows your dog to continue resting in their favorite spots—like the sofa, their bed, or a specific rug—without the constant risk of difficult-to-clean messes.

How I use it

Since Maya was 15, I’ve used a combination of three types. I use large washable pads to cover her orthopaedic bed and the living room carpet she loves and smaller washable pads that I shuffle them around depending on where she is hanging out. I also keep single-use activated carbon pads for when the others are in the wash or when we are traveling. I also stash a few of these in different areas of the house. If Maya is on her way outside but doesn’t quite make it, I can quickly slide a pad under her mid-squat. It’s a total game-changer—the mess is caught instantly, and it’s like it never even happened!

Why I recommend it

I recommend this hybrid approach because it balances sustainability with convenience. Washable pads are cost-effective and stay in place better on furniture, while the activated carbon disposables offer a superior, discreet solution for travel or high-laundry days. The activated carbon disposables are particularly great because they neutralize odours and hide yellow stains, making them much more discreet than classic white pads. This system ensures that an accident is just a quick swap of a pad rather than a major household event.

Considerations

  • Washable Maintenance: To keep the washable pads at peak performance, avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets. These can create a coating on the fabric that reduces the pad’s ability to absorb liquid over time.

  • Strategic Stashing: Keep a few disposable pads within arm’s reach in every room. Being able to grab one in a split second is the key to preventing a mess on your floors or carpets.

  • Travel Essential: The combination of sizes makes traveling with a senior dog much easier. You can layer the large ones in the car and use the smaller ones in hotel rooms or at a friend’s house for worry-free visits.
