Recordable buttons for communication

Why this product is in the Depot

I included these buttons because they offer a unique form of cognitive enrichment that bridges the communication gap between pet and owner. It’s an engaging way to keep a senior dog’s mind active by teaching them to associate a physical action with a specific outcome or word in their owner’s voice.

How I use it

I introduced these to Maya when she was 12 after being inspired by dogs using them on social media. While we don’t use them for complex sentences, she has successfully mastered two main words: “Outside” and “Treats.” She presses the corresponding button whenever she wants to go out or feels like having a tasty mouthful. It has given her a clear way to express her needs as she ages.

Why I recommend it

I recommend these because they prove that senior dogs are incredibly capable of learning new associations. It’s a wonderful bonding activity that provides mental stimulation without requiring much physical exertion. It’s especially rewarding to see the “lightbulb moment” when your dog realizes they can actually talk to you.

Considerations

  • Managing “Abuse”: Some dogs, like Maya, may discover the power of the “Treat” button a little too well! If your dog begins pressing it repeatedly just for extra snacks, don’t be afraid to temporarily put the button away or “closet” it to maintain boundaries.

  • Start Simple: Begin with just one or two buttons for high-motivation activities (like going for a walk) to help your dog understand the cause-and-effect relationship quickly.

  • Placement: Place the buttons on a non-slip mat or near the relevant area (like the “Outside” button near the door) to help reinforce the association.
