Seal oil

Seal oil is a highly bioavailable source of essential Omega-3s, often more easily absorbed by a dog’s digestive system than traditional fish oils. Beyond supporting a soft coat and healthy skin, it contains DPA—a unique fatty acid not found in high quantities in fish oil—which is particularly beneficial for blood vessel health and cardiovascular support. It’s an excellent way to provide comprehensive internal care for your dog’s heart and circulatory system as they age.

Seal oil

Why this product is in the Depot

I selected Seal Oil because it provides a superior alternative to traditional fish oils for senior dogs. Because it is derived from a mammal, its molecular structure is highly bioavailable, meaning an aging dog’s digestive system can absorb the essential Omega-3s much more efficiently. It is a powerful tool for supporting not just skin and coat, but critical heart and circulatory health.

How I use it

Maya has been receiving Omega-3 supplements since she was 10, but I switched her specifically to seal oil in the summer of 2024 when she was 15, based on the advice of my dog physiotherapist. Daily I add it directly into her food and it has become a core part of her nutritional foundation to ensure she’s getting the highest quality fats possible.

Why I recommend it

I highly recommend this for seniors because it contains DPA (Docosapentaenoic acid), a unique fatty acid that is scarce in standard fish oils but vital for maintaining healthy blood vessels. Since making the switch from salmon and herring oils, I feel confident that Maya’s cardiovascular system is getting the specialized support it needs to stay strong in her late senior years.

Considerations

  • Measurement: Use a measuring spoon to follow the weight-based dosage chart on the label to avoid over-supplementing.

  • Ease of Digestion: If your dog has a sensitive stomach and struggled with the “heaviness” of fish oils, seal oil is often a much gentler alternative.

  • Storage: Keep the bottle tightly closed and store it in the refrigerator to prevent the oil from oxidizing and losing its potency.
